In conjunction with Charles A. Flinton, Ph.D., Dr. Mark G. Koetting (rhymes with "setting")is co-founder and co-director of the San Francisco Forensic Institute, a private forensic psychology practice. A significant portion of Dr. Koetting's current work involves the evaluation of potential ‘sexually violent predators’ (SVP), the assessment of homicide offenders serving life terms at San Quentin State Prison, and evaluation/consultation for attorneys throughout the Bay Area. He also devotes a portion of his time to conducting outpatient individual psychotherapy.

For nearly every year since 1993, Dr. Koetting has worked in forensic mental health settings – including outpatient, correctional, inpatient, and residential programs – in both Florida and California. With an intensive focus of study on criminal forensic psychology during graduate school, he earned a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the APA-accredited Nova Southeastern University in 2002, and became licensed in California in 2003. He received formal training at the University of Miami’s School of Medicine and the U.S. Department of Justice in Miami. He was trained in conducting assessments of criminal responsibility, violence risk, and competency to stand trial in an APA-accredited forensic psychology internship at the Metropolitan Detention Center in downtown Los Angeles. Having attended over 50 continuing education presentations in forensic psychology, Dr. Koetting has received extensive post-doctoral training in specialized areas such as violence risk assessment; sexual offender evaluation; psychopathy assessment; and clinical issues pertaining to violent offenders, particularly detected rapists.

For five years prior to entering full-time private practice, Dr. Koetting managed the day-to-day clinical operations of a large outpatient treatment program for violent, chemically dependent, and/or sexual offenders under community supervision in San Francisco and Oakland. In that capacity, he also conducted psychosexual and other forensic evaluations, provided individual and group psychotherapy for high-risk offenders, administered and interpreted phallometric assessments, and supervised doctoral-level psychology interns.

Dr. Koetting has completed over 200 written psychological evaluations of individuals in the criminal justice system; testified in Federal and Superior Courts throughout California; presented papers, as the lead author, at the California Coalition on Sexual Offending, the Society for Personality Assessment, and the American Psychological Association; given specialized presentations to a group of federal judges, California parole department heads, U.S. Probation, and a large public defender’s office.
